Treat retirees with justice, dignity

Posted

To the editor:

I am a retired New York City employee, a widow who lives alone. I am dependent on my pension and Social Security. My husband did not leave me life insurance to inherit and I am 81 years old.

Many retirees spent a minimum of 25 years in the city services. My pension is not that much. We deserve to continue to have free health insurances and other benefits that we were promised while we were working. Uniformed services retirees have higher pension but they worked more dangerous occupations while in the city's employ. They deserve to have good health

coverage too.

The city is willing to spend millions for illegal immigrants while retirees with a minimum of 25 years of service to the city have to fight for free health insurance and other benefits.

Why must every issue be one of "us" verses "them"? People come to America for the same reasons our ancestors came here - for a better life. The only difference between "us" and "them" is the law now and the law then. Our ancestors were allowed to come because the country was big and it needed workers to grow the economy, tend the fields and build the infrastructure around us. That is still true today. Businesses are finding it difficult to find workers, our tax base is in deep trouble as Americans age putting more on Social Security and Medicare and fewer on payrolls to pick up the tab. Immigrants want to WORK, pay taxes and they desperately want to be Americans. But, their undocumented status prohibits all that. Not allowing legal access to America is one of the biggest mistakes we could make as a nation. It is dividing us, harming our economy and stunting our future.
