Morale among the Department of Environmental Protection's police officers has reached “crisis levels,” according to several officers who say leadership’s decision to elevate academy recruits into specialized units over seasoned veterans has deepened frustration over pay, promotions, poor retirement benefits and what they describe as a growing culture of favoritism.
When a department-wide email announcing the transfers landed in officers’ inboxes in late January, many were stunned: academy recruits had secured spots in elite units traditionally reserved for longtime officers. Veterans say the process operated under “two different standards,” describing what one officer called a “good old boys club.”
