A few of our stories and columns are now in front of the paywall. We at The Chief-Leader remain committed to independent reporting on labor and civil service. It's been our mission since 1897. You can have a hand in ensuring that our reporting remains relevant in the decades to come. Consider supporting The Chief, which you can do for as little as $3.20 a month.
In his recent letter, Joseph Cannisi writes that he has “seen more roads resurfaced, repaired and rebuilt in the last three years than in the previous 30 years, combined.” He also notes that he “saved a bundle” on his home’s HVAC system and that Albany is about to turn into the East Coast’s Silicon Valley (“The Biden Legacy,” The Chief, Jan. 3).
However …
Many Americans cannot afford a car for these roads, a house to revamp the HVAC system or an HVAC system if they do own a house. I doubt the rest of the country cares much about Albany revitalization.
The author compares inflation to that which happened during the Reagan administration. The comparison is relative, not absolute. An inflation rate of 10 percent or even 8 percent can make life difficult. The author’s statement reminds me of someone unemployed for 50 weeks being told someone else has been unemployed 52 weeks.
Biden administration voter concerns per exit polls are what arguably cost Harris the election and what possibly — perhaps not totally fairly — will be Biden's legacy: Inflation (and more broadly the economy), the broken immigration system and Israel’s bombing of Gaza with U.S. supplied money.
I emphasize these are voter concerns that I present and with which I neither agree nor disagree. These issues are complex and not easily solved but perception equals reality and overshadows admittedly impressive accomplishments. A successful campaign would have recognized and addressed this.

Nat, If you believe (1) repairing America's infrastructure only benefits car owners, (2) upgrading outdated, energy inefficient heating and AC systems only benefits homeowners and (3) Albany displacing Taiwan as the world's leader in computer chip production only benefits Upstate NY, you need a re-think. Widen your vision.
