Tenure will tell

To the editor:

With Zohran Mandani finishing with 50.4 percent to Cuomo's 41.6 percent, Curtis Sliwa (7.1 percent) was not a spoiler.

Time will tell how much of Mamdani's promises will be kept. He was elected mayor, not king. But raising taxes on the rich to fund necessities for everyone else is certainly a worthy goal. As governor, Cuomo used the threat of layoffs to get poorly-paid state workers to accept a three-year wage freeze instead of such tax increases.

Cuomo's campaign offered nothing but bad experience. So he unsuccessfully tried to scare voters away from choosing Mamdani.

Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa finished even worse than predicted. Accepting an endorsement from Rudolph Giuliani was not too bright.

It's not surprising that the Daily News, owned by the Alden Global Capital hedge fund, would run numerous misleading editorials attacking Mamdani. But The Times of Israel commentary, "What NYC mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has actually said about Jews, Israel and antisemitism" will actually give an accurate account of his mideast positions. Besides, the mayor has no control over U.S. foreign policy. It's also not surprising that a hedge-fund owned company would not favor anyone who wishes to raise taxes on the wealthy.

The post-election Daily News editorial can be summarized by the following: We still think he's anti-Jewish and he'd better not try to keep his promises to the peasants. Meanwhile, less peasants are spending their money on a publication that raises its price while cutting staff and coverage.

I will not blindly follow any political leader. So if Mamdani falls short, I will say so. But here's hoping he makes wise decisions and can overcome the obstacles put in his way by the powerful.
