The International Brotherhood of Teamsters is demanding that the City Council hold a hearing on legislation that would require Amazon and companies with last-mile delivery facilities in New York City to directly employ delivery drivers. The e-commerce giant currently uses third-party delivery service providers that employ drivers across the country.
The DSP model allows Amazon to evade some liability for its workforce, often at the expense of workers’ pay, safety and benefits. The e-commerce giant can easily fire large groups of pro-union employees by eliminating a DSP contract — as it did in a Queens last-mile distribution center where hundreds of workers had unionized with the Teamsters.
