To the editor:
Recent reporting on Bangladeshi workers deceived into fighting in Russia’s war in Ukraine is deeply disturbing.
These men left home seeking honest work, only to be misled, threatened and forced into combat. This is not only exploitation, but a violation of basic human rights.
Stories like Maksudur Rahman’s reveal how vulnerable migrant workers are to trafficking and abuse. Families relying on overseas income are easy targets for recruiters who promise opportunity but deliver harm.
The global community cannot ignore this injustice. The situation in Bangladesh’s Lakshmipur district, where nearly every household depends on a migrant worker, underscores why investing in foreign aid and global poverty reduction is essential. Poverty leaves people with no real choice.
Fathers leave for years, children grow up without them, and limited local opportunities push families into risky situations. This explains why some workers fall victim to exploitation, including being deceived into war. Poverty is not only an economic issue but a root cause of human trafficking and abuse.
Organizations like The Borgen Project show how raising awareness and funding global poverty initiatives can create real change. Investments in job creation, education and economic development can allow families to stay safely in their communities.
I urge U.S. leaders and Congress to strengthen action against human trafficking and support international efforts protecting migrant workers. Raising awareness and supporting programs that fight global poverty can prevent desperation and exploitation.
No one seeking a better life should be forced into war.
