Superiority complex

Posted

To the editor:

When asked by an attendee at a recent Bernie Sanders-Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez town hall why the Republicans have more effective messaging than the Democrats, AOC gave a simple and insightful answer.

She said that the Trump Republicans have a very clear and effective message, the white male supremacy message: You white men are superior. Women are inferior. LBGTQ are subhuman.  You’re right to be racist and xenophobic and consider yourselves superior to Blacks, Hispanics, immigrants and all other people who are not white men.

This message is attractive to young white men because it is so easy to be a selfish, greedy man who thinks himself superior. It’s difficult to be compassionate and serious about helping others, especially the less fortunate.

How many white Trumpian Republican men would want to sacrifice and be inspired by the heroics of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Audie Murphy, Alfred Vanderbilt (who gave his life jacket to another passenger on the doomed Lusitania), Maximilian Kolbe (who volunteered to die in another man’s place in a Nazi death camp), Damien the Leper (who died caring for the lepers on the island of Moloka‘i, Hawaii), and so many others in our midst who are uncelebrated heroes? To Donald Trump, these heroes, like the dead war heroes in Arlington Cemetery, are just suckers and losers.

It’s so much easier to be a selfish pig than a person who is willing to sacrifice for others who are less fortunate or desperately need help.

Some of these people should volunteer to work at a food pantry or soup kitchen to see what is really going on in this country. Maybe then they would see the unfortunate and how the other half lives. People down on their luck, homeless and have lost their jobs. the should try it, it would open their eyes.

The 1980 election proved the power of the GOP message AOC cited. So called "Reagan Democrats" marked a turning point in U.S. politics. White working-class voters, particularly men, crossed party lines and never crossed back. These voters bought into the lies. The lie that women, blacks and other minorities were "taking" jobs from more qualified White men. The lie that the social safety net was the cause of working-class economic stagnation. The lie that "welfare queens" and "strapping young bucks" were driving pink Cadillacs and buying steaks with welfare checks and food stamps, respectively.

However, the biggest lie White men bought into was that they "earned everything they had without anyone's help". That is pure BS. Everyone who succeeds gets someone's help - no one ever succeeded alone.
