Substantially speaking

To the editor:

In my submission “Postmortem” (The Chief, Jan. 31), I am not countering Mr. Cannisi’s arguments about Republican presidents (“Tale of the Tape,” The Chief, Feb. 7). I rebut his "style over substance" assertion.

Harris did not participate in an open primary. Trump did. Harris did not convey Biden accomplishments and distance herself from Biden failures. Harris overloaded on A list celebrities. How did Megan thee Stallion tell me how Harris would improve my life? Harris evaded tough questions. I explained the logic behind voters choosing Trump. All this and other things contributed to a Harris loss. Mr. Cannisi does not address any of these points.

I disagree how Mr. Cannisi believes Republicans always win. I recently watched a video of the 1992 presidential debate. Whatever Bush 41’s failures, not once did he use the buzzwords cited by Mr. Cannisi. Likewise Bush 43. Yes, there are Republican extremists out there (and Democratic extremists). I refuse to believe 77.3 million voters are ragged, backwoods and illiterate, easily swayed by demagogue rhetoric.

I derive no pleasure from a Trump presidency. The mood of this country is so tense now. I’m tired of people assuming that because I fit the Trump demographic, I'm a MAGA extremist. But I also do not live in denial.

The bottom line in 2024: an anointed Democrat who did not run a good campaign lost to a Republican who won primaries and made fewer campaign missteps. And finally: what about Biden’s “you ain’t Black" comment?

Having your name on a primary ballot and skipping every debate, like Trump did, is not participating in an open primary. Only accepting interviews on Trump-loving Fox is not answering tough questions. Neither is avoiding a second debate with Harris after she showed him to be a rambling, ranting windbag.

Liberal A-List celebrities Megan Thee Stallion, Beyonce and Taylor Swift are an overload. But, conservative B-List celebrities like Danica Patrick, Megyn Kelley and Savannah Chrisley are somehow acceptable?

Trump CAN'T make a misstep in the eyes of the MAGA faithful. He said it best "I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn't lose any voters, OK?" It was true in 2016, 2020 and 2024.

Finally, what does Biden's "you ain't Black" comment from May 2020 have to do with the 2024 race? Or Harris for that matter?

Oh, I forgot to mention the buzzwords Bush 41 & 43 did use - "Willie Horton" for 41 and John McCain's imaginary "Black lovechild".
