Hundreds of street vendors and advocates marched from Union Square to City Hall Thursday to demand that the City Council pass a package of legislation that would increase the number of permits available to mobile vendors and reform street-vending enforcement.
There are currently about 850 licenses for general merchandise vendors as a result of a decades-old cap, while there are about 5,100 permits for food vendors. More than 20,000 vendors are on a waiting list for a permit or license.
