Special-ed staffing shortages at a crisis: UFT

More than 2,200 position vacancies

The city’s public school system is short more than 2,200 paraprofessionals, special education teachers and other staff who work with students with disabilities, the United Federation of Teachers found in a recent survey.

The union, which in recent weeks has raised concerns over the Department of Education’s failure to hire enough staff to provide required special-education services, recently surveyed schools to determine the severity of the shortages. The survey found that there were 2,264 vacancies among special-education staff across 474 schools. Over 80 percent of the city’s more than 1,600 public schools participated.
