To the Editor: In late January 2013 the Republican National Committee held its' winter meeting in North Carolina. The focus of the annual event was to reflect on GOP losses the previous November and determine what went wrong. A rising star at the time within the Republican Party, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, offered his diagnosis.
In a very pointed speech, Governor Jindal warned his fellow Republicans that they must stop "looking backwards" and having an obsession with "identity politics." "We must not become the party of austerity. We must become the party of growth. We must not be the party that simply protects the well-off so they can keep their toys." He went on to say that the GOP needed to "stop insulting the intelligence of voters"—and display more intelligence itself and "stop being the party of stupid."
