Amid a recent wave of violence near schools, the city Independent Budget Office found that the number of school safety agents has dropped 24 percent since the start of the pandemic.
There were about 5,050 school safety agents working in the city’s 1,800 public schools during the spring of 2020. As of Feb. 22, the number of agents has fallen to nearly 3,900, according to the report.
