Adams says positions could lead to NYPD officer jobs

Mayor Eric Adams and the city schools chancellor announced plans to train 650 school safety agents throughout the coming school year — and a possible pathway for safety agents and other civilian NYPD titles to be promoted to police officers after two years on the job.

At the end of August, 193 prospective school safety agents finished training just in time for the school year, according to the NYPD. But with the number of agents about 2,000 below pre-pandemic levels, the NYPD is planning to train and hire another 650 school personnel, officials announced during a Sept. 7 community discussion in Queens on public safety.
