Ron Isaac's "At Ease" commentary (The Chief, Nov. 8) is another excellent piece of work. I just wish to add some comments.
Yes, we do need volunteers to serve in the military. In the world we currently live in, I do not think we can survive without our armed forces. Those who volunteer do so with the intention of being used for heroic purposes. That's why we have to become more serious in who we choose to be their commander-in-chief.
Most of the wars our government has our soldiers fight are offensive, not defensive. Democratic and Republican presidents have both been guilty of this. Those who volunteer to be heroes should only be used heroically.
