Paramedic Salih Abdur Rahman dies after shift at training center

Posted

An FDNY paramedic died last week just after finishing his shift at the FDNY’s training academy on Randall’s Island, the department announced.

Salih Abdur Rahman, 46, joined the FDNY in 2002 and worked as an EMT for almost two decades before his promotion to paramedic in 2021.

"The FDNY is mourning the loss of Paramedic Salih Abdur Rahman, a dedicated Paramedic who served the people of New York for more than two decades," FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker said. "He touched the lives of so many EMTs and Paramedics, and the many whose lives he saved. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and his three young children, and his family and friends."

Paramedic Salih Abdur Rahman is survived by his wife Nura Abdul-Karim and his three daughters Inaya, Iman, and Ihasan.

Abdur Rahman, a Marine Corps veteran, served in stations across Manhattan, where he lived, starting at Station 8 in Kips Bay followed by Station 16 in Harlem and then Station 13 in Washington Heights where he worked for nine years. Following his promotion to paramedic, Abdur Rahman worked at both Station 8 and Station 4 in lower Manhattan, before being assigned to the training academy.

Abdur Rahman was, above all, a family man, said Anthony Almojera, the vice president of the EMS officers union. Rahman was Almojera's first partner, the union leader said, and was one of the increasingly few members who remained in FDNY EMS — which has a notoriously high turnover rate — for over two decades.

"He showed me the ropes and was a very nice man," Almojera said of his former partner. "He was always smiling."

Information on the cause of Abdur Rahman’s death was not immediately available. His funeral was held Saturday at the Islamic Cultural Center of New York on the Upper East Side.

He is survived by his wife, Nura Abdul-Karim, and three daughters, Inaya, Iman and Ihasan.

He is the 1,162nd member of the FDNY to die in the line-of-duty.

A scholarship fund for Abdur Rahman's daughters has been created by the FDNY Foundation. Go to https://www.fdnyfoundation.org/donate to contribute.
