Leadership of unions representing FDNY EMTs, paramedics and EMS officers once again warned that their low pay is driving first responders out of FDNY EMS, leading to worse response times and improper care for New Yorkers. Speaking at a City Council preliminary budget hearing for the FDNY’s Fiscal Year 2027 budget last week, Oren Barzilay, the president of Local 2507, representing EMTs and paramedics, and Vincent Variale, representing EMS officers, warned of a mass exodus of first responders.
“The same officers, paramedics and EMTs who ushered the city through covid rushed through the burning towers through 9/11 and who save the lives of New Yorkers many times a day and every day are being driven out of their ranks due to their outrageously low pay and benefits,” Variale said.
