Nurses begin campaign for raises, safe-staffing

“We were called superheroes during the pandemic, but we are not superhuman. We put our lives and bodies on the line during New York’s worst time, and now we should be taken care of,” Matt Allen, a registered nurse at Mount Sinai Hospital, said at an Aug. 18 press conference kicking off a large-scale contract campaign for New York nurses.

The collective-bargaining agreements for about 30,000 nurses across the state are set to expire between Dec. 31 and next March. The New York State Nurses Association called the contract campaign “historic” because it is the first time so many nurses in both private and public hospitals will be negotiating at the same time.
