Nurses want protections against mandatory overtime

State legislation would curtail compulsory shifts

Working any job for 24 hours straight is physically and mentally draining. But for nurses, it’s a common occurrence — and it can be outright dangerous.

“Imagine after you finish working your 12-hour shift at 7 p.m., when you are supposed to be handing off to the incoming nurse, they say to you ‘You have to do an additional shift,’ ” said Una Davis, a registered nurse at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. “The impact on nurses is heartbreaking, but the impact on the patients that we care for can be catastrophic.”
