George Gresham, the long-serving president of the Service Employees International Union Local 1199, the country’s largest health-care union, was soundly defeated by challenger Yvonne Armstrong in officer elections that concluded last week.
More than 38,000 members of the union cast ballots. Armstrong, 1199SEIU’s senior executive vice president, ran as head of the Members First Unity Slate and earned 26,623 votes, or 69 percent of the vote, with Gresham receiving just 31 percent.
