Public interest attorneys, unions and other lawyer organizations across the New York are calling on Governor Kathy Hochul to increase funding for two loan forgiveness programs that provide debt relief for prosecutors, public defenders and lawyers who represent indigent clients.
In a Dec. 3 letter to the governor, defender organizations, district attorneys and unions urged Hochul to add $4 million to the two programs, the Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) and Legal Service Attorney Loan Forgiveness (DALF) programs, in her Fiscal Year 2026 budget. They are also lobbying for expanded eligibility to the “crucial” programs to enable attorneys to enter and stay in public service for a “long and lasting career.”
