Lawmakers want end to ‘indentured servitude’ in state prisons

Legislation also calls for competitive wages in correctional facilities

They’re doing time. But inmates in New York State correctional facilities also work, producing items as diverse as office furniture, textile and apparel goods, uniforms, signs, even eyeglasses and, yes, license plates. 

In all, the state’s incarcerated population makes about 300 products.
