July was another bloody month in New York City with 54 murders, a 59-percent increase from last year’s 34, according to police data. Shootings, also spiked, with the 244 incidents of gunplay recorded last month, far outpacing last July’s 88 incidents.
The vast majority of those killed were men in their 20s. But they also included Davell Gardner, a 1-year-old Brownsville boy who was killed in a Bedford-Stuyvesant park shooting late on July 12 that also wounded two men, one a 27-year-old, the other 36. Police are still looking for Davell’s killer.
