Some powerful and influential Christian leaders are apologists for the far right religious ideology that presently dominates American politics.
Make no mistake, religious leaders covet power and are just as vulnerable to corruption as anyone else. When former Pope Francis was released from the hospital in 2021, he was asked about his health. He answered, “Still alive. Although some people wanted me dead...They were preparing the conclave (to elect a new pope).” Francis faced criticism from American conservatives regarding social matters and immigration in addition to theological issues and he rebuked a “major Catholic television station" that attacked him. He declared, “It is the work of the devil."
