Top FDNY officials and leadership of the unions representing first responders released their long-simmering frustration with a scourge found on countless city streets that they say makes firefighters, and all New Yorkers, less safe.
Protected bike lanes make it harder for firefighters to do their jobs, Kevin Woods, the FDNY’s chief of fire operations testified in a City Council hearing this week. The lanes can make it hard for fire engines to move around other vehicles when racing to emergencies and can block firefighters' access to hydrants in critical situations, he said.
