The FDNY does not have enough firefighting equipment designed to suppress brush fires and combat the increasing incidence of outdoor blazes, top FDNY officials and union leadership testified at a City Council hearing last month.
According to the department, 500 brush fires flared in the city's parks and natural areas in October and November 2024, largely because of a weeks-long drought and high winds. That’s four times the number compared with a year earlier, and FDNY officials expect the problem to worsen.
