A former City Department of Correction employee has been indicted for allegedly concealing more than $135,000 in payments she received from associates and relatives of Rikers Island inmates and for filing a false state income tax return, Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced.
According to prosecutors, Tawanna Shackelford, 48, of Manhattan, worked as a cook at the Robert N. Davoren Center on Rikers Island in 2022 when she began receiving payments through Zelle and Cash App from people connected to those in custody. Between Aug. 4 and Dec. 31 of that year, Shackelford allegedly received $100,292 via Zelle and another $34,849 through Cash App.
