Council pushes for youth employment opportunities

Nearly one-fourth of teen boys and young men don't have a job

To address the high rate of unemployment among 16-to-24 year-olds in New York City, the City Council has proposed legislation that would require the city to create a yearlong mentorship initiative for young adults who participate in the Summer Youth Employment Program.

There is a growing need for employment services for teens who are not working or in school: nearly 18 percent of 16-to-24 year-olds in the city are unemployed, three times higher than the city average, according to a December report from the state comptroller’s office.
