The City Comptroller's office is raising "serious concerns" about the Department of Sanitation's implementation of its commercial waste zones program, finding that the agency awarded lucrative contracts to companies with poor safety records and hundreds of violations.
In a detailed and, in parts, scathing report released last week, the office of Comptroller Brad Lander found that although DSNY technically complied with Local Law 199 — the 2019 reform designed to clean up the notorious commercial waste industry — the agency undermined the program's goals by selecting the industry’s worst performers.
