Employees at nonprofits contracted by the city to collect, process and redistribute New Yorkers’ food waste are facing a wave of layoffs and service eliminations due to cuts imposed on the city’s Department of Sanitation.
The cuts to DSNY’s community composting programs total $3 million, or nearly 10 percent of the $32 million in spending reductions the department made this fiscal year to comply with the 5-percent budget cuts called for by the Adams administration on every municipal agency. Workers affected by the cuts are already feeling the squeeze.
