Battle choices

To the editor:

The full effect of the shutdown is too extensive for a Chief letter. Highlights include a severe shortage of air traffic controllers, massive flight cancellations, delays in inspecting our food for safety.

I vividly recall the crises of 1991 and 2003. I am not a good-enough author to adequately describe the mood before a bunch of us found out we were not on the layoff list. The effects on morale, attitude toward the job, desire to do the job. I was 29 years old in 1991, already old for the job market. In 2003, I was prepared to go live with my parents.

While I kept my job both times I do not wish it on anyone. How can any reasonable person believe the havoc wrought by the shutdown is a good thing? Exactly what harm has come to Trump from the shutdown? The eight Democrats who voted to reopen the government are not "traitors"; they possess the common sense to understand you pick and choose your battles.

As for people who voted for Trump, research the 2024 campaign. There is a plethora of material on the subject. I'm tired of repeating myself to people who don't hear what they don't want to hear.
