“There’s only one New York; I’ve looked at a map, trust me. So because there’s only one New York, there should only be one minimum wage,” Theodore Moore, the executive director of the Alliance for a Greater New York, said at a recent rally in Albany.
While the minimum wage is currently $16 an hour in New York City, Long Island and Westchester, throughout the rest of the state, the lowest workers can earn is $15 an hour. Legislators and labor advocates gathered Monday to push the Upstate Parity and Minimum Wage Protection Act, which would close the minimum wage disparity upstate New Yorkers face. The bill would require workers in upstate areas to be paid $16 an hour by the start of 2025, and $17 an hour by Jan. 1, 2026.
