To the Editor: Six months into the Trump presidency, I wrote, "Donald Trump is a stain on America's soul" and "this stain is indelible and our standing in the world has been permanently diminished."
Unfortunately, what was at the time mainly my opinion has now become fact. For the first time in its 26-year existence, the Stockholm-based International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) has added America to the list of "backsliding democracies" alongside authoritarian-led nations like Hungary, the Philippines, Slovenia and Poland.
