Police 'Greeters' Not Enough

Posted 10/18/21

To the Editor: Mayor de Blasio's plan of having "greeters" at police precincts is not necessarily a bad idea or a waste of money, but it won't improve police-community relations unless the civilian employees and uniformed officers in the stationhouses are willing to listen to members of the public and are willing to take crime, accident and other police reports. Intelligence reports can also be made in cases of suspected serious criminal activity and terrorist activity.

When a homeowner goes to a police precinct to report an attempted burglary at 3 a.m. (providing a video of someone trying to force the doors of his house), and is told there is not enough information to take a complaint report, it's not only wrong and discourteous to the homeowner, but it prevents precinct Detectives from getting photographic and other information about suspected burglars in the neighborhood.
