Virus Deaths of Cop and Firefighter One Day Apart Show Ongoing Risks

The deaths of a Firefighter and a Police Officer from the coronavirus over a 48-hour period Jan. 18-19 came as Governor Hochul and Mayor Adams heralded a big drop in new Omicron cases as proof New York had weathered the winter surge.

Firefighter Christopher P. Viviano, 53, who joined the force in 1999 and was assigned to Ladder Co. 157 in Brooklyn, died Jan. 19, according to the FDNY. He was part of the 9/11 World Trade Center response and had been cited for his bravery.
