The U.S. Department of Labor has opened an investigation into a 2016 United Federation of Teachers election after a losing slate alleged the process lacked transparency and violated union rules.
The May election resulted in a third term for UFT who president Michael Mulgrew, who received 39,176 votes as head of the Unity slate. His opponents, Movement of Rank-and-File Educators [MORE]/New Action Caucus leader Jia Lee and UFT Solidarity Caucus candidate Francesco Portelos, got 10,743 and 1,456 votes, respectively. The election was conducted by the American Arbitration Association.
