Storm Also Flooded NYPD 911 System

The record-shattering rainfall and flash-flooding caused by the Hurricane Ida not only inundated the city subway system but swamped its 911 call system Sept. 1, according to the Police Department and the union that represents the system's operators.

The 911 system saw a 600-percent increase in call volume for the three-hour period beginning 9:30 that night, requiring the department to hold over dozens of call-takers to deal with the "unprecedented" activity, resulting in sporadic delays, according to an NYPD source.
