State Senator: Mayor Mishandled 'Mandate,' But So Did Unions

In the wake of what were considered toss-up races for Staten Island Borough President and a City Council seat in the borough turning into Republican routs Nov. 2, Democratic State Sen. Diane Savino was among those saying that Mayor de Blasio's strident position on the issue was the prime reason for the red wave hitting the borough's shores.

That wave was not confined to her borough, Ms. Savino, whose district also includes a slice of western Brooklyn, acknowledged in a phone interview the morning after the election. On Long Island, where it produced decisive victories for GOP challengers in County Executive and District Attorney races in both Nassau and Suffolk County, the higher Republican turnout was spurred by different issues: mainly criminal-justice changes in Albany, led by bail reform.
