Commissioner Joseph Ponte and 20 subordinates used Department of Correction vehicles for personal travel to casinos, shopping centers, beaches, airports and other locations throughout the Northeast last year, according to a Department of Investigation report released April 28.
The investigation found that Mr. Ponte was out of state with his city vehicle for about a quarter of the year. It also discovered that although one of the justifications for a take-home vehicle is the need to respond to off-hours incidents, Mr. Ponte did not use it to come back to New York to deal with such incidents.
