Local 237: Williams Out Of Bounds on 'Agents'

Teamsters Local 237 April 12 filed an improper-practice petition with the city Board of Collective Bargaining claiming that Public Advocate Jumaane Williams has interfered with negotiations between the union and the Police Department and the city through "a misguided one-man crusade to fundamentally change the job duties and other terms and conditions of employment” of School Safety Agents.

Among the advocates pushing to alter the deployment of School Safety Agents, Mr. Williams has been especially vocal. He has called for a complete overhaul of the program—based on a restorative justice model—and during a February City Council hearing, alleged that many students had reported “verbal, physical and sexual abuse,” a claim for which Local 237 President Gregory Floyd demanded that Mr. Williams provide evidence.
