Judge: Public Has Right to View Records of Complaints vs. Cops

A day after the release of a cache of complaints made against NYPD officers that reach back decades, a Federal Judge Aug. 21 cleared the way for the future disclosure and publication of those complaints and any disciplinary outcome, including those cases where the officers were found “other than guilty.” 

Saying that unions failed to demonstrate that police would suffer irreparable harm from the records’ public disclosure, Manhattan Federal District Court Judge Katherine Polk Failla denied a challenge by a coalition of law-enforcement unions to a new state records-disclosure statute.
