Officer Daniel Pantaleo will not face Federal charges in connection with the death of Eric Garner, shuttering any criminal prosecution in connection with an incident that galvanized the Black Lives Matter movement.
U.S. Attorney Richard P. Donoghue said during a July 16 press conference in Brooklyn that “after an exhaustive investigation...insufficient evidence exists to prove beyond a reasonable doubt” Mr. Pantaleo willfully used excessive force when he and other officers tried to arrest Mr. Garner July 17, 2014 for allegedly selling untaxed cigarettes in Staten Island’s Tomkinsville neighborhood.
