Correction Officer Larry McArdle Jr. didn’t hesitate. When a Rikers Island inmate scaled a perimeter fence at the corner of the George R. Vierno Center rec yard and jumped into the East River during rec time last year, he and fellow CO Gregory Braska leaped into the choppy channel, plucked him out and returned him to custody.
For their actions on the afternoon of June 18 last year, Officers McArdle and Braska were recognized by the Department of Correction and given Meritorious Duty and Excellent Duty awards at the DOC’s annual Medal Ceremony, held June 22 on Rikers.
