The shake-up at the U.S. Bureau of Prisons continues in the aftermath of Jeffrey Epstein’s suicide Aug. 10 at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, with U.S. Attorney General Barr Aug. 19 demoting Acting Director Hugh Hurwitz and appointing Dr. Kathleen Hawk Sawyer to replace him.
She previously was appointed Director of the BOP by Mr. Barr when he was the Attorney General during President George H.W. Bush’s tenure. She held the post from 1992 until 2003, when she retired.
