Calling for the bridging of an “undeniable divide” between police and residents, state Attorney General Letitia James endorsed additional public oversight and input into several aspects of the NYPD, particularly with regard to its disciplinary protocols and mechanisms.
Ms. James’s recommendations formed part of a preliminary report released July 8 following her office’s weeks-long investigation into several days of conflict between officers and the public during the demonstrations, looting and disturbances that enveloped the city in the days and weeks following the Memorial Day death of George Floyd at the knee of a Minneapolis police officer.
