The state is also looking for prospective trainees who are fluent in Spanish.

Manifold Duties

Correction Officers, under direct supervision, are responsible for the custody, security, safety and well-being of criminal offenders in state correctional facilities. They supervise the movement and activities of inmates, make periodic rounds of assigned areas, conduct searches for contraband, maintain order within a facility and prepare reports.

They also advise inmates of the rules and regulations of the facilities and assist them in resolving problems. Correction Officers have a high degree of responsibility for actions and decisions and play a large role in the rehabilitative process of inmates. They may be required to carry firearms.

Correction Officer Trainees must satisfactorily complete all requirements of a 12-month program before advancement to Correction Officer. Trainees must attend the DOCCS Training Academy and live there Sunday evenings through Friday afternoons for eight weeks. The Training Academy program includes academic courses in emergency-response procedures and concepts and issues in corrections. Trainees also receive physical training.

Following graduation, they will be New York State peace officers and receive field training for four weeks, then be assigned to full duty at a correctional facility.

At the time of appointment, candidates must be at least 21 years old, a United States citizen and a high-school graduate or possess a high-school equivalency diploma. New York State residency is required to accept and continue employment.

Evaluations will include a fitness test, medical-standards and psychological evaluations and a substance-abuse screening. Appointees to this position may be required to undergo periodic medical examinations to reassess their ability to perform the essential duties of the position.

Applicants for Correction Officer Trainee, Spanish language, will have an application for Correction Officer Trainee automatically submitted at no additional cost.

Background Check

Candidates will undergo a thorough background investigation to determine their suitability for appointment as a Correction Officer. Felony convictions will bar appointment, and misdemeanor convictions or violations of law may bar appointment. Persons adjudicated as youthful offenders may be disqualified from appointment.

Potential appointees will be investigated to help determine character and fitness, and also to verify information they provide. Applicants must authorize access to educational, financial, military, employment, criminal history and mental-health records. Those who receive a satisfactory evaluation on the background investigation and meet all other administrative requirements will be considered for appointment.

All appointees  must satisfactorily complete a probationary period of up to 52 weeks that starts at the time of permanent appointment.

Test is Questionaire

There is no written test. Applicants must complete a questionnaire online that will collect information about training and experience and will be evaluated against the general background/critical activities of the position.

The passing score is 70. Rank on the eligible list will be determined after adding any wartime Veterans' and Civil Service Law Section 85-a credits to final scores.
