Under general supervision of higher-level personnel, Emergency Medical Technicians provide initial first-aid treatment or emergency medical care, either through an ambulance or a non-ambulance service, at the site of the occurrence.

They also diagnose patients’ medical conditions caused by either disease or injury and render the appropriate emergency treatment. Treatment is performed in accordance with protocols established by New York State and the Westchester Regional Emergency Medical Service Advisory Committee. Supervision is not a requirement of the position.

Applicants must have one of the following certificates issued by the New York State Department of Health: (a) Emergency Medical Technician-Basic Certificate; (b) Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate Certificate; (c) Emergency Medical Technician-Critical Care Certificate; (d) Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic Certificate.

They must also have a valid driver’s license.

There are no residency requirements to participate in the examination, but preference in appointment may be given to eligibles who have lived in the appointing jurisdiction for at least 30 days prior to the effective date of appointment.

No Written Exam

There will be no written or oral test for this examination. Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will receive an evaluation of their training and experience against the background of the duties of the position.

Applicants must indicate and summarize all training, including any formal coursework which was not a part of the degree program or which has not yet resulted in a degree.

Indicate your participation in any continuing-education programs including any convocations, seminars, workshops and the like in which you have participated over the past five years.

The summary of experience must include a comprehensive description of each relevant position held and their dates.

Successful candidates on this examination will have their names placed on the continuous-recruitment eligible list in the order of final scores, regardless of the date on which they filed for or took the examination.
