A recruitment for Skilled Construction Craft Laborer apprentices will take place online from July 23 through Aug. 5.
The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) for Construction and General Building Laborers, Local Union #79, is seeking 200 apprentices.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old at the start of the program and have a high school diploma or an equivalency diploma.
They also must be physically able to perform the work required of a Skilled Construction Craft Laborer, which may include working at heights, in confined spaces and in extreme temperatures, both indoors and outdoors.
They also must be able to lift and carry 94 pounds of material for a distance of 30 feet and stack it to a height of about 54 inches. They also must be able to use a shovel to load about half of a cubic yard of sand into a wheelbarrow, wheel it 100 feet, and deposit it into a sand container.
Applicants must pass a drug-screening, at the applicant’s expense, after acceptance into the apprenticeship program.
The limited-application recruitment will be offered online from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., weekdays from Friday, July 23 through Thursday, Aug. 5.
Only 2,000 applications will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis. The recruitment will be offered for those 10 business days or until all applications have been issued, whichever comes first.
Applicants who do not have internet access may visit their local library or a local State Department of Labor Career Center (see: dol.ny.gov/career-centers).
Should a greater number of applicants apply than Local #79 can accept into its pool of candidates, some applicants may not get through this time. However, Local #79 hopes that work will be plentiful and another recruitment can be held in the near future.
Starting at 9 a.m. July 23, applicants should go to www.mttf.org and follow the links for Local Union #79.
They should fill out the required fields on the applications and not add information outside the fields. Applicants will receive a confirmation email once their requests have been completed and accepted.
The first 2,000 applicants, who are placed into the pool of candidates, will receive an application in a separate email. They will be instructed to download, print and fill out the application.
The applications must be returned in person within 15 days from the date the application was requested to Construction & Building Laborers Local #79, 42-53 21st St., Long Island City, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., on the following dates: July 26-30, Aug. 2-6 and Aug. 9-13. Applications must be received no later than Aug. 13.
Candidates may only apply once during the recruitment period. Those who do not come in with a completed application will be considered to have voluntarily removed themselves from the pool of candidates.
Everyone who successfully applies will receive a date and time for an interview on the day they drop off their completed application.
For further information, applicants should contact JATC for Construction and General Building Laborers, Local Union #79 at 718-383-6863.
