Union slams planned cuts of nearly 500 school crossing guards

The proposed elimination of nearly 500 vacant school crossing guard positions has been slammed as shortsighted and careless by District Council 37, elected officials and transportation safety advocates.

The current budgeted headcount for the crossing guards is about 2,700, but the Adams administration is seeking to slash that headcount by 18 percent, to  2,219, according to the union. There are currently about 2,040 crossing guards on the job.
