The city’s rideshare drivers and their union are making a renewed push for legislation that would make it more difficult for the app-based companies Uber and Lyft to deactivate the drivers’ accounts.
The City Council bill would prohibit the companies from kicking drivers off their apps except for just cause or genuine economic reasons. The legislation, introduced in February 2024, got a committee airing in September, would also require the companies to reactivate drivers who were kicked off in the preceding six years if they were not deactivated for those reasons.
