Local 100 lauds passage of bill requiring conductor on every subway train

Hochul must sign off on the legislation

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority would be barred from operating subways with just a train operator and no conductor, according to legislation passed by state lawmakers. 

Although most of the city’s subway lines have both an operator and a conductor, the MTA uses its “One-Person Train Operation” protocol on a few shuttle lines — such as the Franklin Avenue shuttle in Brooklyn — while weekend and late-night service on the G and M trains also run without a conductor. Trains on the 7 and L lines are capable of being run with just an operator but currently have both a conductor and an operator.
